The Hyundai Motor Company is a division of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group. Developed as a division of the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company, and founded in 1967, the Hyundai Motor Company is known in Australia for cars such as the Elantra, Getz and the i30 compact hatch.
The word ‘Hyundai’ means ‘modernity’ in Korean, demonstrated by the company’s commitment to hybrid vehicle technology, quality assurance and car safety. In 2005, Hyundai Motor Company committed 6.2% of total revenues to research and development. So far, this has equated to a total of over AUD$6 billion.
Capable of manufacturing 1.6 million cars every year, Hyundai operate the world’s largest integrated automobile plant in South Korea. The company also operates facilities out of other major cities, including a technical centre in Germany R&D centre in Japan and proving ground in California. This international focus is mirrored in Hyundai’s popularity around the world.
A variety of Hyundai lines are commonly seen on Australian roads. Hyundai Getz, one of Australia’s most popular small cars, is also widely regarded to be the most economical. The Sonata and Elantra mid-sized lines are known for their luxury and safety, and fuel economy respectively. Among Hyundai’s other Australian lines, the Tucson is an economical SUV solution, while the compact i30 has won many international awards in its two years of production.
Relatively new to motorsport, Hyundai entered rally-car competition in 1998, with a number of moderately successful results in the following five years. The company withdrew from competition in 2003 to further their research and have announced their intention to return in 2010.
