There are few modes of transportation that Suzuki is not involved in manufacturing. Aside from the international popularity of their car and motorcycle lines, Suzuki also produces all-terrain vehicles, outboard boat engines, wheelchairs and small combustion engines for a broad range of purposes.
Suzuki was founded in 1909 as a loom company. Though Michio Suzuki had found success with his new weaving machine, he realized he needed to diversify the products his business manufactured in order to remain profitable. His answer was to produce a small car.
Today, Suzuki is the world’s ninth-largest producer of automobiles, with 35 production facilities in 23 countries.
In Australia, Suzuki has six passenger lines available. Grand Vitara and SX4 are leading all-wheel drives, the Swift is a new generation sub-compact and the Alto is an economical small car marketed for inner-city use. The Jimny Sierra is a small but powerful 4WD, and the APV is a light-commercial cargo vehicle.
A trusted manufacturer in the industry, Suzuki is also heavily involved in the production of vehicles, or vehicle components, for other car makers, including the Holden Barina and Holden Cruze.
As well as their ubiquitous presence at motorcycle championships (such as the motoGP), Suzuki are a dominant presence in the Junior World Rally Championship and other motorcross events.
While Suzuki has not chosen to release any vehicles using hybrid technology to date, the Suzuki Alto was recently ranked by the Australian Government as one of the country’s three greenest cars.
