British luxury marque Bentley has announced today that their massively-popular Bentayga SUV will soon be available in Australia with a 4.0-litre, triple-charged turbo diesel engine, from next April. Prices are expected to be significantly lower than those of the W12 variant, with a touted tag at $335,000.
The biggest change with the ‘entry level’ Bentayga (can we even call it that?) will be what’s under the bonnet. Rather than the stratospheric W12 engine, it comes with a more reasonable diesel V8, which has seen other applications within the VW Group’s cars. This should endow the big Bentley with 320kW and a scarcely-believable 900Nm, rocketing the Bentayga to 100km/h from rest in just 4.8 seconds.
Despite the performance on offer, the diesel Bentayga’s rated fuel consumption is at a meagre 7.9-litres per 100km, which represents a huge drop from the W12’s rated consumption at 12.8-litres per 100km. Speaking to GoAuto at an event in Melbourne, Bentley’s Asia-Pacific sales manager David Simpson said that they expect the diesel to make up most of the Bentayga’s local sales, while there will still be interest in the W12.
“The Australian market is a very diesel-heavy market. Audi hasn’t led with petrol with Q7, Maserati haven’t led with petrol in the new Levante. There is certainly an appetite and understanding of what it means to have a turbo-diesel engine,” Simpson remarked.
“Now that we are introducing a triple-turbo engine, and introducing it in a package like a Bentley, we know it will certainly be a stronger preference in Australia than the W12. W12 means a lot to the Bentley heritage and there are a lot of customers that have a feeling that a true Bentley has a W12.”
With the diesel Bentayga incoming, Simpson is confident that it will cause a significant increase in current sales numbers. “We never really comment on volumes. I don’t think we’re looking to double sales or add another 50 per cent to be honest, we just know that for the Australian market, something like a big ticket diesel is perfectly suited to customers.”
