After what was possibly the shortest-lived generation (just 2 years in existence), the FK2 Civic Type R has been pushed aside for the new golden boy, the FK8. It’s due Down Under on October 1st, but Honda has opened the order books early.

Following its declaration of being the quickest front-wheel drive production car to lap the Nurburgring, the hype over the new UK-made Type R is at its crescendo (you may need to consider tripping someone up to get your name down). Prices and more granular specification details will be made available closer to launch.

“Our dealers have been telling us that customers are eager to put their names against a car so we’ve opened the order books early to allow them to secure their orders,” Honda Australia Director, Mr. Stephen Collins, said. “We understand the level of interest as the Civic Type R represents the pinnacle of performance for the Civic range and our faithful enthusiasts have been lining up.”

“We’ve had extraordinary interest in this car from existing owners and those enthusiasts who are looking for something bolder and visually striking; something distinctive from the usual European offerings,” he added.

Based off of the newly introduced 10th-generation Civic hatch, the Type R of course is a far different machine under the skin, with bespoke chassis components, an Adaptive Suspension System, a comprehensively reworked aero package, 20-inch aluminium wheels, uprated Brembo brakes, and stickier tyres.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC four-cylinder that’s nearly identical to unit powering its immediate predecessor. Here, though, it outputs 238kW and 400Nm at peak. And to help with acceleration, Honda has given the 6-speed manual transmission a set of revised gear ratios. That said, the Type R is still a 5-door hatch and should still be just as practical as the the standard hatch.
