The Mazda MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback) is now on sale in Australia, offering buyers more refinement, a touch more luxury, and of course, a folding metal roof as opposed to the fabric top.
Like the standard MX-5, the more expensive RF will come in either standard guise or the higher-tier GT spec. Prices start at $38,550 (plus on-road costs) for the base RF with a six-speed manual transmission and can go as high as $46,890 for the GT equipped with the 6-speed automatic and Black Roof option selected.
The the previous 3rd MX-5 had a similar solution for buyers who wanted an alternative to the car’s standard fabric top. Though that implementation used heavier mechanism, the RF’s roof assembly comprises of four parts, including the front, middle, and rear roof as well as a back window glass panel.
Impressively, there is only a minimal intrusion to boot space with the roof folded in, and can be done at speeds of up to 10km/h, taking 13 seconds from start to finish. And with the higher price also comes more standard equipment.
Only the naturally aspired 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol four-cylinder powers the MX-5 RF, generating 118kW and 200Nm. It includes 17-inch alloys, LED headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity and the MZD Connect infotainment system (which they've now made standard across the range) which includes satellite navigation. There’s also standard fit Blind Spot Monitoring and Read Cross Traffic Alert.
Step up to the GT, though, and there’s adaptive headlights that swivel to better illuminate an incoming corner, black or tan leather interior trim, power mirrors, climate control, and heated seats. Buyers also have the option of a Nappa leather and a black-painted roof as an extra.
