Timed perfectly for the European summer, Mercedes-Benz has launched an open-top version of its fabulous SLS – the SLS AMG Roadster. Expect the V8 stunner to debut locally early in 2012.
Transforming the gullwing SLS into a convertible took considerable engineering from the Mercedes-AMG conglomerate and the result is nothing short of stunning. The fabric roof takes just 11 seconds top open or close and can be operated at speeds up to 50km/h.
No changes under the bonnet with the dry sump AMG 6.3-litre V8 delivering 420kW/650Nm via a transaxle and seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.
Suspension features a double wishbone/track rod design, straight from motor racing technology with wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers made from forged aluminium and the engine is mounted behind the front axle for a 46/53 per cent front/rear weight distribution. The SLS AMG Roadster runs the latest AMG Ride Control electronically-adjustable damper system with three driver-select modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport plus).
The soft top is available in three colours (black, red and beige) and when open, folds into a ‘Z’ configuration behind the seats. The rear window is made from heated, single layer safety glass. Compared to the hardtop SLS, the Roadster loses only three litres of booth space (173-litres to 176-litres).
On the options list is the head-warming Mercedes-Benz Airscarf system and leather-lining for the roll-over bars.
Inside is the standout SLS luxury and the AMG Performance Media system which not only provides mobile internet access but also various motorsport-inspired telemetry displays such as rear time individual tyre pressures, real time display of engine output, lateral and linear acceleration and even a lap timer for track days.
Audio is a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound surround sound system.
No word yet on local pricing but the standard SLS is listed in Australia at $464,000.
