Finally, a petrol motor!

2018 Maserati Levante S GranSport

Maserati’s massively-profitable SUV, the Levante, has just received a significant update for the 2018 model year, though its not one limited to just a visual nip and tick and fiddling with the prices. No, the 2018 model year will see the introduction of the Levante S, a petrol-powered variant of the previously diesel-only model, which will undoubtedly appeal to all who thought that the Levante was somewhat sacrilegious in its exclusive offering of an oiler.

The 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol may be new to the Levante in right-hand drive markets, but it’s been used before on the rest of the Maserati range. With 321kW and 580Nm coming from the Ferrari-built unit, it’s slightly down on torque (580Nm over 600Nm) but has a huge power advantage, likely why it’ll hit 100km/h from rest some 1.7-seconds faster than the turbodiesel.

There have been a raft of upgrades for the Levante for the new model year, not limited to the new powertrain option. There’s now a handful of active driver assistance systems like lane-keeping aid, blind-spot monitoring and highway assistance, as well as traffic sign recognition and a 360º camera system. Additionally, all Levantes now get electric power steering, where the outgoing model made do with a hydraulic system.

The Levante lineup is now split three ways, into a base Levante, a Levante GranSport, and a Levante GranLusso, the latter two replacing the previous ‘Sport’ and ‘Luxury’ nameplates used to denote the variants. It’s the same with the Levante S, with the base S sitting pretty above even the most expensive Levante GranLusso diesel, so you’re paying quite a bit for the ‘Ferrari engine’ bragging rights.

The top-spec GranLusso models have also seen a small revision, with the cabin finished in Zegna silk as standard, where it used to be a (costly) option. The doors also close with a gentle motorised motion too, while a selection of new alloy wheels finish the update.

Prices for the Levante now stand at:

  • Levante diesel – $139,990
  • Levante diesel GranSport – $159,990
  • Levante diesel GranLusso – $159,990
  • Levante S – $169,990
  • Levante S GranSport – $179,990
  • Levante S GranLusso – $179,990
