After what feels like an eternity, Nissan’s local office has finally confirmed the arrival of the Leaf 5-door EV hatch and nailed it down to an August appearance, with prices starting at $49,990 for the sole variant it’ll be available in. As Nissan’s technological flagship, the Leaf will offer the full gamut of Nissan’s active safety systems & convenience features, which will most certainly be of great interest to potential EV buyers, either existing or new.

“With strong interest in the new Nissan Leaf, we see great potential for the vehicle and at this price, we are giving it every chance to succeed. It’s certainly an exciting time for EV buyers. With a contemporary design, increased range and a long list of standard features, this incredibly fun car presents Australian electric vehicle buyers with a stylish, affordable option.” – Stephen Lester, Managing Director, Nissan Australia

The 2020 Leaf will be arriving as a 40kWh proposition, with the more powerful (but shorter-range) 60kWh Leaf e-Plus likely due sometime later. The 40kWh is hardly a slouch though: With that battery, the Leaf can go as far as 270km on a single charge, offers 110kW/320Nm of grunt, and can hit 100km/h from rest in just 7.9-seconds.

The Leaf can be fully charged from zero via a home plug socket in 24-hours, though that charging time can be dropped to just 7.5-hours with a 7kW home charger (for which Nissan has partnered with JETCharge to provide). But if you plug your leaf into a high-speed CHAdeMO rapid charger, you can go from 20% to 80% charge in just 1-hour.

The new Leaf will be generously kitted out, as befitting the near-$50k it commands. LED automatic headlights, automatic wipers, 17-inch alloys, keyless entry/go, electrochroamatic mirrors all come as standard. Further niceties include a heated steering wheel, smartphone mirroring-capable infotainment system (the first for a Nissan in Australia), and part-leather interior trim.

The Leaf is not just an EV maverick, but it’ll also serve as the technological halo car for the brand. As such, you will find all of Nissan’s very latest advanced driver assistance kit which should include AEB, lane-keep assist, active cruse control, blind-spot monitoring, and 360º camera view.
