Price of entry now up by a whopping $4k, but justifies it alright.
Range Rover’s small and stylish baby SUV, the Evoque, will be arriving on Australian shores in the usual cacophony of trim levels and engine options, providing for easily one of the most confusing buying experiences currently on the market. Where makes like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz give you maybe 2-3 trim options and an equal number of engines, Range Rover’s offering the sleek new Evoque with no less than 7 trim levels and 6 engines at launch. And we’re here to help make some sense of that.
There are a total of 24 available trim+engine configurations to choose from, upon which you can choose about a million different options and option packs. If this makes your head spin, we totally agree with you. With Jaguar-Land Rover profits slipping, we can’t help but wonder if the company would benefit from a touch of streamlining. Maybe if they called their friends in Gothenberg, Sweden and asked for a little advice…
Anyway. The range kicks off with the Evoque S with the D150 oiler, commanding a pretty substantial $62,670, making it no less than $4k more than the outgoing ‘Pure’ entry-level grade. That said you do get a lot more kit, like (manually-levelled) LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, dimming & folding exterior mirrors, all-round parking sensors, a reversing camera, and 10-way electrically-adjustable front seats wrapped in grained leather. You also get dual-zone climate control, an electrochroamatic centre mirror, a 180W 6-speaker audio system fed by a 10-inch infotainment screen (with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto). You also get AEB, lane-keep assist, and traffic-sign recognition. Not bad, eh?
Move up to the Evoque R-Dynamic S for $65,650 and you pick up quite a bit more kit, in addition to the P200 engine. You get in addition to what’s listed above things like chrome tread plates, a more aggressive exterior design, alternative-design 18-inch alloys, black headliner, and metal pedals.
The Evoque SE starts from $68,610 with the D150 oiler, though you can also have it with any of the other 5 engines on offer. Atop of the kit on the S, you also get things like memory for the seats & mirrors, ‘Premium’ LED headlights with auto high beam, hands-free tailgate, 14-way electric adjustment for the front pews, the very-swish dual-screen Touch ProDuo infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, Clear Exit monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and automated parking.
For $71,590 you can bag an Evoque R-Dynamic SE, and you get 20-inch alloys, and the same unique bits as the R-Dynamic S (tread plates, pedals and the like).
Sitting atop the ‘regular’ Evoque range is the HSE, which starts at $90,220 with the P300 petrol, but can also be had as a D240 diesel. Here you’ll find that handsfree tailgate again, as well as diamond-polished 20-inch alloys, keyless entry, ‘extended’ leather upholstery with quilted Windsor leather seats, 16-way power adjustment for the front pews, soft-grain leather on the steering wheel (replete with ‘Atlas’ bezels), the ‘ClearSight’ digital centre mirror, a 10-speaker audio system by Meridian, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.
R-Dynamic HSE ($94,100) adds that sharper exterior aesthetic, and a unique 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheel design.
For a limited time there’ll also be a First Edition model, which will cost you $91,300 for with either a D180 diesel or a P250 petrol. This comes with a smattering of optional extras fitted as standard like a black roof, a fixed panoramic sunroof with powered blind, rear privacy glass, front fogs, powered headlight washers, badge deletion (why?), Matrix LED headlights with daytime running lights, heated front pews (in grained leather, not the nice Windsor stuff), ‘First Edition’ badged carpets, unique branded cabin trim, just-as-branded illuminated tread plates, a heated steering wheel, and a I’m-too-rich-for-this electrically-adjustable steering column. You also get a heads-up display and configurable ambient lighting (yes these are usually cost-options), and you can choose between three premium metallic paint finishes at no extra cost (namely Yulong White, Seoul Pearl Silver, and the First Edition-exclusive Nolita Grey).
