It’s simple – the limited edition V12-powered Ferrari 599 GTO has lapped the company’s Fiorano test track in 1 min 24 secs, eclipsing the previous road car lap record of 1 min 25 secs set by the Enzo model.
The GTO is derived from the competition 599XX model, with reduced weight and improved aerodynamics (double the downforce of the 599 GTB Fiorano). Power comes from the 599XX’s 6.0-litre V12 engine, modified for road use and complying with Euro 5 standards.
Mounted mid-front, the 65-degree V12 delivers a scintillating 500kW at 8250 rpm and peak torque of 620Nm at 6500 rpm. All of that in a car which weighs just 1605 kgs.
Ferrari says the fuel consumption is 17.5l/100kms and emissions are rated at 411g/km.
Drive is to the rear wheels via Ferrari’s latest six-speed F1 gearbox which provides shifts in 60 milliseconds. The transmission provides multiple downshifts by keeping the ‘Down’ paddle pulled when braking hard.
The 20-inch alloy wheels with titanium bolts run 285/30 9.5 front Michelin tyres and 315/35 11.5 rears.
Vehicle control systems are massive: SCM2 (second-generation Magnetorheological Suspension Control), ESP (Electronic Stability Control) and F1-Trac (Traction Control) – the latter can be deactivated for high-speed or race track driving. Brakes are carbon-ceramic featuring a new material for improved stopping when cold and more consistent pedal feel.
While leather trim is an option, in order to keep weight down, the interior is somewhat austere – with lots of aluminium and carbon fibre.
The ‘599’ nameplate reflects the limited production run – only 599 of this stunning GTO derivative will emerge from Ferrari’s plant.
