BMW’s evocatively styled 5-Series Gran Turismo (GT) has arrived in Australia priced from $143,400 for the entry-level 530d model.
The range-topper is the twin-turbo V8-powered 550i ($192,900). The six-cylinder petrol model (535i priced at $151,400) is a new turbocharged 3.0-litre engine with maximum power of 225kW at 5800rpm and peak torque of 400Nm between 1200-5000rpm.
In the 550i, the twin-turbo V8 delivers 300kW/600Nm, while the 530d is good for 180kW/540Nm.
All versions come with BMW’s stunning electronic eight-speed transmission and Brake Energy Regeneration.
Looks are just breathtaking and feature a BMW first – frameless four doors. At the front, the traditional BMW kidney-shaped grille and headlights actually lean forwards.
At the rear, the 5-Series GT looks magnificent and distinctive with broad rows of LED lights. The hatch is a combo as you can use the traditional boot or open the entire hatchback, including the rear window.
Inside is the usual BMW ambience and a massive list of comfort/convenience technologies including Dynamic Drive Control, four-zone automatic air conditioning, Adaptive bi-xenon headlights, Panorama sunroof, rear-view camera, satellite navigation, head-up display and more. The individual rear seats (a bench seat is also available) adjust their back angle and can slide forwards/backwards by up to 100mm – all electronically controlled.
With the rear seats folded flat, the luggage capacity is an impressive 1,700 litres or 440-590 litres with the seats in place.
Up front is a massive 10.2-inch screen displaying BMW iDrive information and the satellite navigation maps. Rear seat entertainment systems are also available with eight and 9.2-inch screens.
Chassis tuning features BMW’s remarkable Adaptive Drive and Dynamic Drive Control. Air suspension is standard on the rear and wheel sizes range from 18-19-20 inches.
Naturally the usual BMW safety features are fully loaded with Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Night Vision on the options list. A Rear
View camera with Top View is standard.
