X1 Takes BMW Into Compact SUVs
Compact SUV buyers have a new style leader with the launch of the cheeky BMW X1.
With the styling cues of its big brothers - the X5 and X3 - the five-door X1 measures only 4.45 metres in length and comes with the expected array of BMW luxury and technical features.
In Europe, the X1 is powered by either the 190kW 2.8-litre six cylinder petrol engine, the 150kW 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel or the 130kW 1.8-litre single-turbo diesel.
Luggage capacity ranges from 420 litres to an impressive 1,350 litres with the rear seat folded flat.
Drive is via the latest generation of BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. This is an intelligent system which varies the power distribution between front and rear axles according to varying levels of traction on loose surfaces.
