BMW Australia has confirmed the new, range-topping Z4 Roadster model - the sDrive35is - is headed for local launch in May next year.

Powered by BMW's glorious 3.5-litre twin-turbo straight six engine, the new King of the Z4 family makes its world debut early next year at the Detroit Auto Show.

At this stage, BMW Australia can't confirm local details or pricing, but expect this rip-snorting sports superstar to be a little north of the current Z4 sDrive35i's sticker of $120,400.

Maximum power is 250kW and peak torque is 450Nm or up to 500Nm with an overboost function.

Drive is to the rear wheels (like all serious sports cars) via a seven-speed double clutch automatic transmission with launch control.

The Z4 sDrive35is sits 10mm lower than other Z4s thanks to an M Sport adaptive suspension kit.

With BMW EfficientDynamics technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering and on-demand control of ancillary units, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of the newcomer are no higher than the Z4 sDrive35i.

BMW Australia is currently enjoying a great start to summer with sales of the current Z4 Roadster tracking at the best monthly levels since the first model was introduced in 2003
