Ferrari unveiled their drop top LaFerrari which, as you might have guessed, is a roofless version of their 708kW hybrid hypercar.

Pictures of the car surfaced from the Italian marque without a clear indication as to its name, with the media logically calling it the LaFerrari Spider as other cars from the company have used that naming convention after having their roofs removed.

However, the file names to the pictures Ferrari published, as Autocar UK found out, hinted that they plan to have it use the ‘Aperta’ name, which is typically reserved for harder and faster limited run variants such as the 458 SA Aperta and 599 GT Aperta.

Ferrari has reportedly approached potential customers with the prospect of owning the roofless LaFerrari, as is the way it goes with their top end models. What we don’t yet know is what will be different about the ‘Aperta’ over the LaFerrari coupe and how many will be made.

It will very likely have the same powertrain package as the original car, with a 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V12 paired with a 120kW electric motor to generate a combined 708kW and 900Nm, but perhaps tuned for more aggressive power delivery.

Unlike other roofless Ferrari’s tho, this new ‘Aperta’ will not – in the name of weight saving and tight packaging – have a hard or soft electrically folding canopy but instead will have a removable carbon fibre roof.

Owners who paid the car’s reported €3.5 million (5.1 million AUD) price tag should be looking at a delivery somewhere in 2017.
