Rumours abound in the Northern Hemisphere (on both sides of the Atlantic in fact) that Jaguar plans to steal the limelight from the German brands at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show by revealing its first SUV.
While seemingly at odds with sister company Range Rover, the historic first-ever Jaguar SUV would likely be built on the XF Sportbrake (wagon) chassis. European reports suggest a sporty twist on SUV looks and performance would differentiate Jaguar’s so far un-named vehicle from the likes of Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery.
Natural engine choices would be from the Jaguar XJ in terms of the 202kW/600Nm 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel and for the petrol alternative - the 375kW/625Nm supercharged 5.0-litre V8.
With the F-TYPE now launched, an SUV product remains a gulf in the Jaguar product portfolio.
And the British marque has a history of ambushing its German rivals’ parades at the Frankfurt Motor Show – a few years ago Jaguar rolled-out the XJ at the same time as Porsche was unveiling the Panamera in Frankfurt. As well as the motor show stand, Jaguar had plenty of the all-new XJs on the roads in Frankfurt for VIP transfers from major hotels to the motor show – that would be a show-stealer in anyone’s book.
