New Generation Mazda3 MPS
Savvy hot hatch buyers should look closely at the new generation Mazda3 MPS lineup.
Building on the success enjoyed by the acclaimed first generation MPS – more than 30,000 have been sold globally since 2006 - Mazda's designers and engineers have brought to the all-new 3 a slick package of performance and styling features.
Under the bonnet is a turbocharged version of Mazda's perky 2.3-litre direct injection 2.3-litre DOHC four cylinder. Maximum power is 190kW and peak torque is 380Nm.
MPS drives the front wheels through a revised six-speed transmission.
On the outside, MPS gains a unique sports grille, LED tail lights, side indicators in the mirrors and a comprehensive sports bodykit comprising front and rear aero bumpers, side skirts and a rear spoiler.
Nicely-styled 18-inch alloy wheels and 225'40 rubber complete a great looking package.
Inside MPS features a 4.1-inch colour multi-function screen integrating satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone connectivity and trip computer information. On the audio front there is a 6-disc in-dash MP3/WMA-compatible CD system with an AUX jack.
For the driver there is a smart sports seat with 8-way power adjustment and lumbar support with 3-position memory, a nice leather wrapped steering wheel and gear lever.
MPS Luxury models get all that plus a premium Bose amplifier with 10 speakers, bi-xenon adaptive headlights, rain-sensing auto wipers and an auto-dimming interior rear view mirror.
In standard form, the Mazda3 is one of the very best hatchbacks for ride and handling; in MPS guise with the extra oomph from that turbo engine and even better grip, it should be a scintillating drive.
Priced at $39,690 for the MPS and $43,290 for the MPS Luxury, the new Mazda3 derivatives go head-to-head against some well-credentialed European hatchbacks.
