Mercedes-AMG has just teased what could very well be the upcoming GT 73 4-Door Coupe in their “Thank you for 2019” video. The car in question is slated to sit atop the 4-Door Coupe range when it's launched in 2020. Did we mention that it’s a plug-in hybrid?

The upcoming PHEV is engaged to take on the ‘73’ nameplate and that’s interesting. In the past, AMG reserved those digits for only a handful of their most powerful, top-of-the-line cars. The last was an SL 73 from the R129 generation and that used a 7.3-litre V12 that eventually went on to power the emotive Pagani Zonda supercar.

While the SL 73 from the mid-nineties only churned out 386kW from under the bonnet, the GT 73 4-Door Coupe of tomorrow might have a system output closer to 600kW. At that point, the electrified AMG’s main rival - at launch- will be from the Volkswagen Group in the form of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

The upcoming 4-Door Coupe will also have the 4Matic moniker, obviously. The rear axle looks set to receive power from the venerable M178 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 while an electric motor will drive the front axle. In the video, the car was heard emitting a whirring sound as it accelerated, confirming its electrified powertrain.

Power is then channelled to all four wheels via the same nine-speed automatic affair as found in the AMG-GT 63 S 4-Door Coupe, with century sprint times in the (very) low 3 second range. According to a report by Autocar, the plug-in hybrid GT 73 4-Door Coupe could have an EV range of up to 50 km. Which is nice.

The same report also goes on to mention the Geneva International Motor Show as its possible launch venue. Whatever the case maybe, we can’t wait to hear more from the 73-badged AMG – even if it is a hybrid.
