Historic British sports car brand MG is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and pulled a stunner in Beijing by revealing a concept compact SUV called the ‘Icon’.
MG has been owned for some time by China’s largest automotive brand – SAIC.
Design for the MG Icon was done jointly by the company’s Birmingham-based team under the guidance of design director Anthony Williams-Kenny and SAIC Motors European Technical Engineering Centre.
Finished in MG’s hallmark racing colours of red with a white roof, the Icon compact SUV features a rear-end style reminiscent of the current MGB GT model and inside are four individual seats (the rears fold down for cargo versatility).
“The MG brand has a unique set of values and heritage and allows us to offer individual design values to our products,” Anthony Williams-Kenny revealed. “The MG Icon represents our vision of a modern MG and we feel that the small SUV canvas demonstrates MG’s capacity for progressive design with respect for its long heritage.”
