Might this bring the name back to Oz?
Nissan has dropped a sketch of its new Altima saloon, previewing for the first time (properly, at least) the upcoming model that’ll debut at the New York motor show. The Altima is a significant car for the North American market, hence its debut there, though its pretty important for us, too.
What’s clear from the sole teaser is that the design of the new Altima has been heavily influenced by the lines and features brought about first by the Vmotion 2.0 concept car, with the enormous, prominent Vmotion grille and slim headlights. What’s clear is that while the outgoing Altima was a rather elegant looking thing, the new generation model will add some much needed vigour to the nameplate, assured to win over US customers.

However, that sharper design language may also make it a more solid case to bring back to Australia. The Altima was the last of Nissan’s passenger cars to be axed from the local lineup as the company ‘repositioned’ itself as an SUV company. It didn’t intend to, but the slowing sales of passenger cars and continued interest in SUVs meant it was just the natural thing to do.
That said, Nissan Australia has communicated on several different occasions that they aspire to have far more variety in their range than they do today, and the Altima might be the beginning of that expansion. We don’t have our hopes up, but never say never.
