Toyota displayed the most production-ready yet version of its all-new FT86 sports car at the Australian International Motor Show.
Due for launch mid next year, Some say the FT86 is the replacement for the Celica as Toyota re-engages with sports car buyers, but the story is much more complex than that.
And the car itself is much more complex and a real sports car.
In fact the Toyota FT86 is a co-development with Subaru and will run a horizontally-opposed, 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated Boxer engine using Toyota-developed direct fuel and port injection.
And – like all true sports cars – drive will be to the rear wheels. Transmissions will be a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic (the latter with steering wheel paddle shifters).
Toyota FT-86II looks great with a high-performance on-road stance and low centre of gravity.
Toyota says its new sports car will be light-weight and agile to drive – so probably a bit more tasty than some of the previous Celica models.
