Toyota’s hydrogen fuel-cell FCV-R sedan made its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show ahead of global production slated for 2015.
Hydrogen is an attractive fuel source for vehicle manufacturers as it is a has no C02 exhaust emissions (in fact it emits just water), can be easily stored and transported and comes from a variety of sources. Problem is, until now the fuel cell stacks have been quite large and cumbersome.
Toyota’s FCV-R is a compact (4,745mm overall length) four-door sedan which mounts it fuel-cell unit underneath, delivering space for four passengers and luggage. It’s also very nicely styled.
The 70MPa hydrogen fuel tank delivers a cruising range of around 700kms – much better than pure electric vehicles.
