A 100kgs weight reduction, improved aerodynamics, better fuel-efficiency and available air suspension are just some of the highlights of the all-new new Mercedes-Benz C-Class range which has broken cover in the Northern Hemisphere.
Best of all, the newcomer has an immediate ‘wow factor’ with gorgeous looks. Compared to the current model, the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is longer overall and in the wheelbase and also wider.
Sporting the hallmark ‘Benz long bonnet and set-back passenger compartment, the all-new C-Class breaks new ground with the front grille fins closed for aerodynamic efficiency. Headlights are H7 halogen as standard but LED versions are available.
Inside is an all-new look which, as you’d expect, maintains Mercedes-Benz’ classic quality and style. There’s a new one-piece centre console and a centrally-positioned free-standing multimedia screen (7.0-inches or 8.4-inches) with a touchpad controller on the centre tunnel.
“Mercedes at its best – that’s the new C-Class, which sets new standards for the mid-range segment on many fronts,” explained Daimler AG’s development boss, Prof. Dr Thomas Weber. “It is characterized by an emotional yet clear design which is continued in the high-quality and modern interior. Its efficient and high-performance engineering provides the basis for a high standard of driving enjoyment.”
The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class arrives in North America in two models – the C300 4MATIC with a turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine delivering 175kW/370Nm and the C400 4MATIC with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 good for 245kW/480Nm. Drive is via the seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission.
Underneath is an all-new suspension design – a four-link front and five-link rear layout. Or, for the first time you can option a C-Class with Benz’ remarkable AIRMATIC suspension. And there’s new electromechanical power steering.
As always with ‘Benz, there’s a host of technology – attention assist and collision prevention assist as well as a 360-degree camera and active parking assist. Plus, on the options list, some of the best from the S-Class and E-Class including active lane keeping assist.
But perhaps the biggest news is the significant weight reduction which comes courtesy of a high-tech aluminium-hybrid body (the aluminium content up from 20 per-cent to 50 per-cent). In combo with the new engine technology this delivers fuel savings of around 20 per-cent compared to the current generation.
Mercedes-Benz Australia will announce local details closer to launch.
