Mercedes-Benz’ new E63 AMG goes on sale locally later this year highlighted by a new 5.5-litre biturbo V8 engine with more performance and reduced fuel consumption.

Definitely amongst the absolute best high performance sedans and wagons money can buy, the new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG boasts 386kW/700Nm in standard form or a rip-snorting 410kW/800Nm with the optional AMG Performance Package. That’s good enough for zero to 100km/h in just 4.3 seconds or 4.2 seconds.

But, compared to the current model’s 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, fuel consumption is down by 22 per cent to average 9.8l/100kms (10.0l/100kms for the wagon).

The new 5.5-litre biturbo V8 is a technological masterpiece combining stunning performance and fuel economy – it runs an aluminium crankcase, air/water intercooling and auto start/top. AMG’s optional Performance Package lifts the maximum turbocharger boost from 1.0 bar to 1.3 bar.

Fuel consumption is also enhanced thanks to the new AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed automatic transmission which features a ‘Controlled Efficiency’ mode with auto start/stop and a shift pattern which sees standing starts in second gear and gear shifts at lower engine speeds. Realistically, in normal day-to-day driving, most E 63 AMG drivers could use the ‘C’ setting constantly while still enjoying stunning performance.

Underneath, the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG scores the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension which is also technically superb – 56mm wider in the front track and independent wheel carriers for increased negative camber in corners. The rear features air struts with automatic level control.

Also new are more powerful AMG ceramic composite disc brakes and an electromechanical steering system.

The Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG sits on new–design 10-spoke, 18-inch AMG alloy wheels with 255/R40 18 tyres on the front and 285/R35 18 tyres on the rear.

Apart from the new alloy wheels, the latest E63 AMG can be identified by its wider front guards with ‘V8 BITURBO’ badges.

Inside is the beautiful three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel from the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG which is flat top and bottom. Also sourced from the CLS 63 AMG is the three-dimensional, full colour TFT screen in the center of the speedo.

As well as the uprated engine, buyers of the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG who opt for the Performance Package gain an AMG Performance steering wheel finished with black Alcantara in the grips, red-painted brake calipers and, for the sedan version, a carbon fibre AMG bootlid spoiler and an electric rear window blind.

There’s the usual ‘Benz-AMG high-tech driver aids such as Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and three-stage ESP.

Mercedes-Benz Australia will announce full details and pricing for the new E 63 AMG models (sedan and wagon) closer to launch later this year.
