Every Frankfurt Motor Show you can count on Mercedes-Benz for unveiling the ‘show stunner’ and this year was no exception – the magnificent S-Class Coupe.
Technically a concept, there seems little doubt the superb coupe is destined for production to become the brand leader for the world’s leading car company.
‘Sensual Clarity’ was the design theme but there’s no doubt the designers had strong gene pools to plumb – the latest S-Class and previous generations of Mercedes-Benz coupes provide a world-beating starting point.
Combining the usual elegant Mercedes-Benz proportions with a stretched dome-shaped roof and frameless doors, the S-Class coupe is no shrinking violet, riding on massive 21-inch alloy wheels and measuring a massive 5050mm in length (the wheelbase is 2945mm). Surfaces are beautifully curved, there’s a bulbous, muscly look for the rear and the detail is magnificent – including diamond finish for the full LED headlights.
Inside, Mercedes-Benz designers took advantage of the latest developments in airbag technology to craft a boldy sculptured dashboard which seems to flow seamlessly into the door panels. Like the new S-Class sedan, the coupe runs three 12.3-inch display screens but the car shown in Frankfurt went further with aluminium control elements.
From Mercedes-Bens Design in Palo Alto, California comes a touch screen with four world clocks which is located in the centre console – buyers of cars like this frequently operate in multiple time zones.
The massively sculptured seats are works of art but probably won’t make it into production.
Under the bonnet is Mercedes-Benz’ magnificent 4.7-litre bi-turbo V8 petrol engine.
